Psychological Counselling

Psychological counselling in English

Psychological counselling can be useful when you are going through a stressful or uncertain period and would benefit from a professional space to think more clearly about what is happening.

You do not need to have a diagnosis or a severe psychological difficulty to ask for support. Counselling can help with situations that feel difficult to manage, decisions that are hard to make or periods when you feel overwhelmed, stuck or unsure about what to do next.

How counselling differs from psychotherapy

Psychological counselling is usually focused on a current difficulty, decision or life situation rather than on treating a specific mental health disorder.

The work may involve understanding what is happening, clarifying your thoughts and emotions, considering different options and developing ways of responding that fit your circumstances more effectively.

Psychotherapy may be more appropriate when difficulties are persistent, recurring or significantly affecting several areas of life, or when the focus is on treating a psychological disorder or changing broader patterns that have developed over time.

The distinction is not always obvious from the beginning. If it becomes clear that another form of support would be more appropriate, we can discuss that together.

What we can work on

Counselling is not about being told what to do or receiving ready-made solutions.

We can look together at the situation you are facing, how you are responding to it, what makes it difficult and what matters to you in deciding how to move forward.

Depending on what brings you to counselling, the work may include clarifying priorities, understanding emotional reactions, considering different perspectives, working through uncertainty or developing more effective ways of managing stress and difficult situations.

The aim is to help you understand the situation more clearly and make decisions that are informed by your needs, circumstances and values.

Questions

What may be useful to know

Can I come to counselling if my problem is not severe?

Yes. You do not need to be in crisis or have a diagnosed mental health condition. Counselling can be useful when you are dealing with a difficult period, an important decision, a transition or simply a situation you would like to understand and handle more effectively.

What if I am not sure whether I need counselling or psychotherapy?

You do not need to decide that before getting in touch. The first conversations can help clarify what you are dealing with and which form of support would be most appropriate.

What if I do not know exactly what I want to talk about?

That is not unusual. Sometimes the starting point is simply a sense that something feels difficult, confusing or unresolved. We can begin there and work towards a clearer understanding of what needs attention.
